Since the establishment of English Department in 1999, it has boasted with energy and prosperity. On the basis of college English teaching sector in ZZILI, The department now has developed into a comprehensive department of both English major education and scientific researches. It, though young, has been contributed greatly to the development of the whole Institute. The college English course has been awarded as “the excellent course” for several years running and especially in 2001, it was awarded as “provincial-level excellent course”. The passing rates of CET-4 (band 4 examination for college English) for several years have enjoyed the leading position. Additionally, the passing rates of TEM (band 4 examination for English major) have surpassed 90%, which is higher than those of the same-level institutes. 14% of the graduates of the department in 2003 have got the chance to study as postgraduates, and the enrollment rate for postgraduate is in the first place in the institute. The department, as a new part, has been and is dedicating for the boom of the ZZILI.

　　English major, program with four-year education, involves more than 40 courses, including comprehensive English, advanced English, audio-visual English, oral English, English-Chinese translation, English reading course, linguistics, British and American literatures, English correspondence for commerce, etc. the aim of this major program is to foster all-round talented persons with specific language skills, professional communicative abilities, fundamental cultural qualities, and considerable knowledge in trade, tourism, science and technology, and humanity, who have the faculties to engage in teaching, translation, foreign trade, foreign affairs, and management, etc.

　　The department has advanced facilities consisting of 6 modernized language labs with a total capacity of more than 500, among which 3 are the digitalized language labs, which provide advanced equipment for listening and speaking.

　　The department has a strong staff of 60 with high professional qualities. The faculty includes English teachers, Japanese teachers and Russian teachers (2 professors, 8 associate professors). Among them, 1 teacher has gained the PH.D. Degree and 24 have the master’s degrees. Taking the middle-aged professors and the lecturers as the teaching mainstay, the senior and the young teachers form a teaching and academic circle of high level. The department also invited professor Sun Zhili from Luoyang PLA Foreign Languages Institute as the part-time professor. With the collective efforts, the strict attitude, and the teaching sincerity, the teachers have more than 50 articles and theses published in the national periodicals, and 10 of them were selected in the key periodicals.

　　Under the direct leadership of the Party, the department puts the ideological and political constructions in the first place, and stresses on the students’ administration and education and has set up a solid Party Branch and League organization. In recent years, it has sponsored many extra-curricular activities in the Institute, such as English corner, English handwriting contest, “Go To The Outside World” English speaking contest, and English plays, etc. The students of English major have also made great achievements in the Festival of Science, Technology, and Culture for University Students, in the English Speaking Contests, and in the “Challenger Cup” Science and Technology Invention Contest, and have gained great credits for the department. The department, on the foundation of its achievements, will embrace the bright future with great endeavor.
