　　Under the efforts of the institute leaders, a new specialty “household appliances”, which belongs to the discipline of “electrical machinery and electrical equipment” was set up on the basis of a traditional major electric automation after the approval of China Light Industry Ministry and State Household Appliance Bureau. This specialty is geared to the needs of the light industry and household appliance industry, training talents for this newly born industry of our country. After 17 years of continuous construction and development, it has gradually become a characterized specialty with its features, advantages, and a teachers group of reasonable knowledge and age frame, profound theoretical base, creativity and hard—working spirit. A research institute which has great influence on discipline development, economic construction, social science and technology development was built up. A series of accomplishments were achieved in teaching and scientific research, most of which even reached the domestic advanced level. In view of these successes, it was appraised as the ministerial key discipline in 1997 by the experts’ panel from China Light Industry Association. In 2000, experts from Henan Province set it as a provincial key subject.

　　Leaders from the department and institute both attached great importance to the building and development of this discipline. With more money invested and favorable policies provided, a good working environment has been formed. Till now, the institute has invested 560,000RMB in the main experiment equipment for this discipline and 940,000RMB in experiment equipment which can show the advantages of this department. The total areas of all the laboratories is 2200㎡. Since 1988 the total investment in equipment has amounted to 3.2 million yuan and 2.5 million yuan since 1994. There are 75 computers at its disposal.

　　Currently, there are 45 teachers and researchers, 23 professors and associate professors, 36 masters and in—service masters, forming a well—structured academic group with high academic levels. The specialty of electrical machinery and equipment has its obvious professional features and advantage of combining production study and research together. There are four sections concerning the information and intelligent control. The first section mainly studies and develops household networking central controller. The study of the second section aims mainly at improving the intelligent household appliances and enabling them to communicate with the net by using the technology of combining fuzzy controller with neuron network. The third section involves in the household information network model on the basis of general computer technology. It uses field bus distributed intelligent control theory to solve the special technical problems in household network and assign relative communication agreement. The fourth section focuses on the improvement of household appliances’ testing level by digital technology and electronic products, largely household appliances’ EMC research and their reliability technology research. Among the above four sections, fuzzy control and informational household appliances, with great advantages, have reached a high level in China and made a great difference in this field both at home and abroad. The fuzzy control section is highlighted and supported by the State Planning Committee, Science and Technology Committee of the state and province. For three years, this key scientific and technological project has received continuous financial support , which will be carried on in the next 3 years.

　　For years, it always adheres to the priority position of discipline building and follows the international trend of this discipline. By attaching equal importance to teaching and research, it makes some breakthroughs in scientific research. A complete scientific research system has been formed and significant achievements have been attained in fuzzy control technology and research of information household appliances. In recent years, teachers in this specialty have published more than 160 papers in academic journals both domestic and abroad and made some research achievements, some of which filled the country’s blank in that field. Since 1997, this discipline has gained more than 5 million scientific research funds. There are 15 major researchers working on the research of fuzzy control technology of household appliances. It was they who have made achievements in the mere 2 years from 1997 to 1999, one of which—refrigerator fuzzy controller—was awarded second prize of Henan Science and Technology Achievement in 1999. Based on this discipline, the department set up a “Fuzzy Control Technology Center” sponsored by the State Planning Committee. Adhering to the guiding ideology of combining production, study and research, the department found a high and new technology enterprise “Zheng Zhou Hua Yi Science and Technology Development Corporation”. By transporting the latest research achievements to large enterprises like Henan Xin Fei Corporation and Tinan Jin Xiao Ya Corporation, it not only industrialized the research achievements, but also gained good economic and social profits—bringing about more than 2 million benefits.

　　In order to adapt to the development of modern control technology and to be in accordance with the demands for intelligent household appliances, this discipline established “intelligent sensor and controller research room”. After 10 years’ development, it has invented many intelligent sensors as washing machine’s cloth qualities and quantity sensor, digital resonance water level sensor, infrared turbidity sensor, and relevant intelligent sensor detector which not only took the place of imported products and filled in the domestic blank in this field, but also contributed to the escalation of household appliances in China.
